Learn FPV!
FPV made simple!
At Pyrodrone, we know your drone gear is a serious investment, and one of the most critical components is your LiPo battery. High-performance drones demand powerful batteries, but with that power comes responsibility. Whether you’re flying freestyle, racing, or capturing cinematic shots, understanding LiPo battery safety is key to keeping your equipment – and yourself – in top shape. Here’s a guide to safe handling, charging, and storage for your LiPo batteries.
LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries are known for their high energy density and lightweight design, which makes them ideal for FPV drones. However, they are also sensitive to mishandling, improper charging, and storage conditions. Here are a few important characteristics to remember:
The number one rule with LiPos is: Never leave them unattended while charging. Here are additional essential safety tips for charging:
LiPo batteries don’t like to be fully charged or fully discharged when not in use. Here’s how to store them safely:
When it’s time to hit the skies, follow these precautions:
LiPo batteries don’t last forever. After a certain number of charge cycles (usually around 300), you might notice reduced performance. When it’s time to retire your battery, dispose of it safely:
Parallel charging allows multiple LiPo batteries to be charged at once, saving time by connecting them in parallel to charge together. However, the Pyrodrone team generally advises against it, as 9 out of 10 LiPo fires are linked to parallel charging mishaps. Here’s why:
Batteries Must Match: Only charge batteries with the same cell count (e.g., all 4S) and similar voltage levels (within 0.1V per cell). Mixing them can lead to dangerous current surges.
Use a Quality Parallel Board: If you choose to parallel charge, use a reliable board with built-in safety features like fuses and balance connectors to distribute the charge evenly.
Balance Charge Always: Make sure each battery’s cells are evenly charged by using a balance charger—this is critical to avoid overcharging individual cells.
Don’t Overload Your Charger: Ensure your charger can handle the combined capacity of all connected batteries, or you risk overheating and potential fire.
For most pilots, it’s safer and more reliable to charge your batteries individually. If you decide to parallel charge, follow these precautions closely to minimize the risks.
In the rare case that a LiPo battery catches fire, follow these steps:
Pro Tip: If you're looking for some high quality LiPo packs, we recently launched our Hyperjuice battery series! Top quality and great prices.
By following these tips and maintaining a habit of caution, you can safely enjoy the full power and potential of your LiPo batteries. Taking the time to charge and store them properly can save you from serious hazards and help prolong their lifespan – and, as always, Pyrodrone has you covered with the safest gear to keep your drone flying high.
